GIFT City’s Investor Onboarding Gets a Digital Makeover: From 20 Days to 60 Minutes
GIFT City is witnessing a major shift in investor onboarding as digital processes cut the time required to bring global investors on board from nearly 20 days to about 60 minutes. The transformation could strengthen GIFT IFSC’s appeal, improve access for overseas investors and support India’s ambition of becoming a global financial hub.
Digital Onboarding Reshapes GIFT City’s Investor Experience
GIFT City’s international financial ecosystem is moving towards a faster, largely digital investor onboarding model, addressing one of the key operational challenges faced by overseas investors. According to the report, investors from 90 countries have already been onboarded in GIFT City, highlighting the growing international reach of the financial centre.
The change is particularly relevant for fund managers, brokers, wealth managers and other financial institutions operating through GIFT IFSC, where attracting overseas capital is central to the business proposition. Traditionally, documentation, verification, authentication and other compliance requirements could stretch onboarding timelines to around 20 days. Digital technology is now compressing that process dramatically.
| Earlier process | Digitalised process |
|---|---|
| Around 20 days | Around 60 minutes |
| Multiple manual steps | Integrated digital workflow |
| Physical documentation | Digital document handling |
| Cross-border verification challenges | Technology-enabled verification |
The KYC Bottleneck and Why It Matters
Investor onboarding has been a significant friction point for GIFT City. Industry participants have previously highlighted the difficulty and cost associated with physical document attestation, jurisdiction-specific compliance and separate KYC procedures for overseas investors. A March 2026 report noted that these hurdles had particularly affected the ability of GIFT City fund managers to reach individual overseas investors, with institutional investors and family offices accounting for much of the international participation.
The issue is important because GIFT IFSC is designed to connect Indian financial institutions and investment products with global capital. A slow onboarding process can therefore undermine one of the centre’s biggest advantages: providing international investors with a gateway to Indian and global investment opportunities.
Technology Brings Multiple Processes Under One Roof
The emerging digital model combines several stages of the investor journey into a single technology-enabled workflow. Platforms operating in this space now offer capabilities covering identity verification, document verification, digital KYC, e-notarisation and digital signing. One such platform, Nuvanta, says its infrastructure can handle investors from more than 60 countries and facilitate onboarding in around 60 minutes.
The broader transformation can be understood through a few key improvements:
- Digital identity and document verification
- Remote handling of overseas documentation
- Electronic notarisation and signing
- Centralised KYC and onboarding workflows
- Reduced dependence on physical paperwork
- Faster account activation and investment readiness
This is particularly valuable for NRIs, OCIs, foreign nationals and overseas entities that may otherwise face considerable administrative friction.
Regulatory Evolution Supports the Digital Push
Technology alone, however, cannot solve onboarding challenges unless the regulatory framework accommodates digital processes. The regulatory environment has been evolving in this direction. In June 2026, IFSCA formally recognised electronic notarisation and electronic apostilles for overseas investors, helping remove a major documentation barrier.
IFSCA has also been developing remote verification mechanisms, including video KYC for NRIs. Earlier industry feedback indicated that while video KYC had been enabled, gaps remained for foreign nationals and certain investment products. The combination of regulatory reform and technology therefore has the potential to make GIFT City considerably more accessible to a broader international investor base.
Faster Onboarding Could Strengthen GIFT IFSC’s Global Ambitions
The reduction from 20 days to 60 minutes is more than a technology upgrade; it could become an important competitive advantage for GIFT City. As global investors increasingly expect financial services to be digital, seamless and remotely accessible, onboarding speed can influence where they choose to invest and which financial centre they use.
For GIFT City, the immediate opportunity is to convert faster onboarding into higher participation from NRIs, family offices, institutional investors and foreign investors. The development could also support the expansion of investment products and fund-management activity within GIFT IFSC.
With more than 200 fund management entities and over 300 schemes already reported at the end of 2025, the ecosystem has been expanding rapidly. If digital onboarding successfully removes one of the major barriers to participation, GIFT City could move another step closer to its objective of becoming a credible international financial centre.
